Which itinerary to choose for your tour of Gaspésie?
The area of Gaspésie is 30 340.6 km². Seize the golden opportunity to tour the area in either direction via the loop route.
When you arrive at Sainte-Flavie by Route 132 or at Mont-Joli by Highway 20, you have the choice to start your journey either from the north (from Sainte-Flavie to the east, starting with Matane) or from the south (from Sainte-Flavie to the south, starting with the Matapédia Valley). And whatever your decision, you are sure to find along the way landscape vistas of sea, mountains, valleys, bays and coasts.
Route 299, which runs through the heart of Gaspésie from north to south (or vice versa!) from Sainte-Anne-des-Monts to New Richmond, is also worthy of consideration. This 143 km route crosses the Chic-Choc Mountains, the last extension of the Appalachians. Route 299 will take you to the Parc national de la Gaspésie, a stop not to be missed! On your way, you will follow the Cascapédia River.
Route 198 allows you to go to Murdochville, either from L’Anse-Pleureuse or Gaspé. Located 650 m above sea level, Murdochville became established through the development of a large copper deposit and ore processing.
From Matane, Route 195 gives you access to the Réserve faunique de Matane, where more than 6,000 moose share 1,282 km² of land. This road will also take you to the covered bridges of Saint-René-de-Matane, dating back to 1940. Continuing further, at the crossroads of Routes 132 and 195, Amqui allows the discovery of two other covered bridges.
