A weekend in Haute-Gaspésie

Between breathtaking cliffs and the Gulf of St. Lawrence as far as the eye can see, let yourself be charmed by the coastal villages of Haute-Gaspésie for a weekend! Meet the majestic Chic-Choc Mountains, a paradise for hikers.

Here is a suggested itinerary* for your stay. Rule number 1: once in the car, get into vacation mode and enjoy the scenery! Heading east, 6 hours from Montréal or 3.5 hours from Quebec City, Mont-Joli welcomes you in Gaspésie. Here, no more highways… Welcome to Route 132, towards Matane, for miles of coastline.

Day 1
Noon: Tasty stop in MataneIn Matane, take Avenue Saint-Jérôme, where a few restaurants are open for lunch: the Microbrasserie La Fabrique, the Boulangerie Toujours Dimanche and the Café du monde. After a nice lunch, take the road for an hour, direction Sainte-Anne-des-Monts. In Grosses-Roches, the winding road amazes even the locals!

2:30 p.m.: Sharks and touch pools at Exploramer
In Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, stop at Exploramer, a true museum of the St. Lawrence. The shark is the star of an interactive exhibition, and aquariums present the species of the River. Children (and brave adults!) will touch different marine species in the touch pool, including the unusual sea cucumber. With a little more time, sea excursions and fish harvesting activities are also offered. You will have to return!

5 p.m.: Happy Hour
For a drink, go to the microbrewery Le Malbord, with a terrace by the sea. You will find fine craft beers, inspired by the richness of the terroir. Enjoy dinner in the heart of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, at La Broue dans l’Toupet, the Hôtel & Cie’s restaurant. Changing with the seasons and inspirations, its evening table d’hôte showcases the flavours of the region.

7:30: Overnight in the Parc national de la Gaspésie
Take Route 299, towards Parc national de la Gaspésie. You can sleep there at the campsite, in a chalet, or at the Auberge Gîte du Mont-Albert, a magnificent 4-star inn with a modern decor inspired by nature. Take the time to order a box lunch from the Gîte team in anticipation of your next day’s hike.

Day 2

9 a.m.: Hiking in the Parc national de la Gaspésie
After a delicious breakfast at the Gîte, grab your box lunch and walk to the Discovery and Visitor Centre. The staff will advise you for your day hike. Whether a climb of several hours or a simple walk, there is something for everyone! On the program: beautifully preserved nature, spectacular viewpoints and, hopefully, moose and caribou observation. Before leaving, visit the exhibit hall to learn more about the park’s geology, history, flora and fauna.

1 p.m.: Fishing or prospecting
In the afternoon, those who own a boat can go to Cascapédia Lake and enjoy the water nestled in the mountains (rental and fishing until September 3, 2018). Another option is to become prospector for a few hours, at the Mount Lyall Agate Mine, located about fifteen minutes to the south. In this surface mine, look for geodes containing beautiful gemstones such as agates, amethysts, and quartz.

5 p.m.: Happy Hour
Have a drink at the bar of the Gîte, sitting comfortably in front of the huge glass roof with a magnificent view of Mont Albert, before dinner at the famous restaurant on site.

Day 3

9 a.m.: Breakfast and river trip to Cap-Chat
On the way back, take a breakfast break at the bistro of Valmont plein air, in Cap-Chat. Espresso, latte, crepes, and other delights will delight you. You can also extend your excursion by renting a kayak on-site to descend the Cap-Chat River. Choose between the easy 5 km or the 17 km, barely more demanding, which lasts about 3 hours.
