Top 5 – Water activities in Gaspésie
Are you a water lover? Here are five flatwater or whitewater activities you can enjoy in the fresh or salt waters of Gaspésie.
Magnificent canyons are found in the heart of the Chic-Chocs and in the region’s coastal mountains. The highly qualified instructors at Eskamer Aventure, in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, will be happy to introduce you to canyoning (also called canyoneering). Enjoy rappelling down rapids, ziplining, leaping into deep basins and sliding in crystal-clear natural waterslides! At Griffon Aventure, in L’Anse-au-Griffon, you can observe stunning waterfalls and explore a steep watercourse while hiking, swimming or sliding in natural waterslides… The more adventurous can also explore cliff walls and jump into emerald green pools! Canyoning is a fun activity for the whole family (including teens!). All the equipment is provided.
In Murdochville, Chic Chac invites you to go rafting in the rapids of the Madeleine River, from early spring to late June. The river is divided into three sections; which section you will explore depends on the water level. The first river section goes from Lake Madeleine to the bridge over Route 198. The second, which has class I to III rapids and is perfect for families, is from the bridge to a small farm. The last section, which is the most challenging, includes class I to V rapids! Chic-Chac also offers a two-day rafting package, which includes 2 rafting excursions (on the York and/or Madeleine rivers, depending on water levels), 6 meals and 1 night at the friendly Chic-Chac hostel.
Scuba diving and snorkelling
Discover one of the most beautiful diving sites in Québec, in Percé Bay! Experienced divers will be delighted to see colourful coral reefs and a variety of marine species: lobsters, crabs, a multitude of fish and curious seals! The Club nautique de Percé (a yacht club) offers introductory dives to level 3 certification. In addition, both Cime Aventures (Bonaventure) and Nature Aventure (Matapédia) offer snorkelling in the crystal-clear Bonaventure and Matapédia salmon rivers. With Cime Aventures, a guide will accompany you on the first section of the Bonaventure River, while with Nature Aventure, a guide will tell you about the lifecycle of Atlantic salmon and their behaviour in rivers.
Canoeing, canoe camping and kayaking
In Bonaventure, Cime Aventures offers a two-day self-guided canoe camping package on the crystal-clear Bonaventure River. If you only have a few hours, opt for the 2-hour or full-day Family Tour or Famous Tour package. You can also rent canoes or kayaks on site. Nature Aventure, in Matapédia, offers several guided canoeing or kayaking packages, varying in length from 2 hours to 5 days. Depending on your abilities (and water levels), you can explore the Matapédia, Restigouche, Upsalquitch, Patapédia, Kedgwick, Assemetquagan or Causapscal rivers. Nature Aventure also offers canoe and kayak rentals.
Surfing and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP)
Surfing, a sport that is gaining in popularity, can be enjoyed in Percé, near iconic Percé Rock, as well as in Sainte-Flavie, at the gateway to Gaspésie. Put on your wetsuit and get ready to catch the waves in the region’s invigorating waters! Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is offered in many locations, including at the Auberge festive Sea Shack (Sainte-Anne-des-Monts), at Camp de Base Coin-du-Banc, at Écovoile Baie-des-Chaleurs (Carleton-sur-Mer) and in Forillon National Park, where you can enjoy a stunning sunset adventure off the Penouille Peninsula. Nature Aventure (Matapédia), Valmont Plein Air (Cap-Chat) and Cime Aventures (Bonaventure) all offer SUP in rivers.
