Top 5 – Must-see locations for wildlife watching in the Chic-Chocs
Caribou, moose, bear, salmon…there are many animals that inhabit the forest in Gaspésie. What better way to spend a day in the Chic-Chocs than to watch fauna? Make sure to visit the 5 top locations to observe wildlife.
The second highest peak in Québec, Mont Jacques-Cartier rises more than 1,200 m. This altitude results in tundra-type vegetation at the peak, the preferred natural habitat for caribou. With some luck and patience, you may be able to see some of the members of the only caribou herd south of the St. Lawrence River!
Caribou also occur at the top of Mont Albert, although in smaller numbers than at Mont Jacques-Cartier. Pay attention, several species of birds may be observed during this hike: American Three-toed Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and also Fox Sparrow, Merlin, Great Horned Owl, Broad-winged Hawk, and Golden Eagle.
Sainte-Anne River is one of the 22 salmon rivers of Gaspésie. Its crystal-clear waters make it easy to watch Atlantic Salmon. Visit the Grande Fosse lookouts to see them more easily. Birdwatching enthusiasts will also be excited about the likelihood of watching Harlequin Duck on the river from mid-May to mid-June.
Matane Wildlife Reserve
More than 4,000 moose inhabit the 1275 km2 territory of the Matane Wildlife Reserve. With this exceptional density in Québec, it is not surprising that the reserve is known as a moose paradise! Enjoy a hike or a safari with an interpretive guide to get out and see them. The Matane Wildlife Reserve also offers a black bear observation activity; watch this animal in its natural habitat and learn more on this species – in a safe way.
Moose are the stars at Mont Ernest-Laforce. They particularly enjoy lakes and ponds where they feed on aquatic plants, as well as deciduous forests where yellow birch, young firs and various shrubs are favoured. Keep your eyes wide open!
The Chic-Chocs area is an exceptional playground for canyoning, fishing, hang gliding, camping, rafting, and so much more! #gaspesiemesvacances
