Do I need reservations for my vacation in Gaspésie?
If you are planning a holiday in Gaspésie between mid-July and mid-August, it is highly recommended to book your accommodation in advance. Here are some things to consider to assist with your planning.
High and low season
The high season in Gaspésie is from June 24 (Saint-Jean-Baptiste weekend) to September 1 (Labor Day weekend). That said, tourism peaks with the provincial construction holiday (late July to early August) and continues until the 2nd or 3rd week of August. It is therefore strongly recommended to reserve in advance if you plan to travel during these 5 weeks. Depending on the year, the entire month of August can be problematic. The beginning of July is definitely a time to consider if you want to travel without reservations and still enjoy all the activities that are available
Type of accommodation sought
The need to make reservations also depends on the type of accommodation you are looking for.
If you want to sleep in a bed and breakfast, be aware that most of these establishments have between 3 and 5 bedrooms. In addition, only some bed and breakfasts offer private bathrooms in each room. This type of accommodation tends to fill up more quickly; it is also popular with international travelers who travel mainly at the beginning and end of the season (especially September and October).
Cottages are definitely the type of accommodation that requires advance bookings early in the season. Some places are booked up to 1 year in advance! However, for the majority of cases, bookings before March are to be expected, especially if you are traveling from mid-July. Be aware that most cottages are not available for a single night. The minimum stay requirements can be up to 7 days. If you are booking at the last minute, consider perhaps renting a motel with a kitchenette, or a trailer on a campsite.
As for camping, reservations may be necessary, especially if you are traveling with a trailer or motorhome. It will be easier for tents without services, and more. Some campsites are more limited, for example those in national parks.
It is also important to consider your specific needs when travelling. Finding a room at the last minute in high season is difficult. Imagine finding one also where your pet is accepted, or the room is adapted for someone with reduced mobility, or one with a 4-star standard. If your needs are specific, or they limit your selection of accommodations, it is highly recommended to book in advance, regardless of the time of year. This way you are certain of securing a room that suits your needs.
Types of trip
Do you want to stay in the same establishment for several nights, or change places each day? Are you the type to meticulously plan your stay, or rather to see wherever the road takes you? Do you travel with young children, or solo? Do you ride on a motorcycle? By bicycle? These are all points to think about. A good compromise to consider if you do not want to plan everything, but at the same time not worry, is to book your accommodation 1 or 2 days in advance once on site.
What will happen if I don’t reserve in advance? It may well be that everything works out well. You may also have to travel 300 km more one day to get to a hotel that will have a room for you, or spend 2 hours calling all hotels in the area for availability, instead of enjoying an activity. It is also possible that you have no choice but to sleep in an establishment that does not suit you (a youth hostel dormitory while you dreamt of a romantic room with a view of the sea… not the worst situation, but not what you had wished for!). In short, to advance book when you travel in high season in Gaspésie will eliminate worries and will leave more time to enjoy your holidays with peace of mind. You can also opt to travel during a less busy period.
